No Drinks When Polls Are Open in Lexington
In 2013, only two states in the entire US had bans against purchasing alcohol on Election Day, South Carolina and Kentucky.
The ban dates back to late 1700’s when saloons doubled as polling places. But as some politicians began trading booze for votes, a quick ban was put in place to ban all sales of alcohol.
Lawmakers have been trying to overturn the accident ban for years and finally succeed in 2013 when Kentucky overturned the ban.
But, when the state pulled the ban, they left it up to local governments to choose if they want to keep the ban in their community.
Although Lexington lawmakers haven’t given opinion on if they want to keep the ban, they have yet to vote on it for the 2014 election season.
But the ban has some worries for business owners in Lexington, but said it time for the Urban County Council to get rid of the law.
If you are trying to get a drink Tuesday in Lexington, you can, just after the polls close at 6 p.m.
