Newspaper reports not all trustees okay with suit against Kernel

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ)- The Courier-Journal says some members of UK’s Board of Trustees are not on board with the decision to suit the university’s newspaper, The Kernel.

UK sued the paper, which is independent from the university after it asked to see documents regarding a sexual harassment investigation into a professor on campus.

UK refused to turn over that information resulting in The Kernel getting Attorney General Andy Beshear involved. Beshear sided with The Kernel, saying the school violated the state’s open records law.

The Courier Journal says a member of the board called the university position, “unwise and unfair”, saying it creates doubt about how the university operates.

The paper also reports UK President Eli Capilouto defended the suit during a meeting Friday, saying the school has a responsibility to protect the victim’s privacy.
