New statue unveiled in Lexington
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- The city of Lexington got a Mother’s Day present Sunday afternoon.
A new statue was unveiled at the Women’s Recognition Garden in Wellington Park.
The sculpture portrays Katsina, the name for wooden dolls Hopi Indians gave girls to learn about their responsibilities in the community.
The Herald Leader has reported she is the first female statue in a public place in Lexington, that there are more statues of animals than there are of women.
The lack of representation extends across the country.
A non-profit, The Artemis Initiative is trying to change that in Lexington.
They worked with Council Member Jennifer Mossotti to install Katsina and they hope to install other statues honoring women in the future.
