New “Safe Haven Baby Box” ceremony Tuesday

RICHMOND, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A ceremony will be held Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the installation of a new Safe Haven Baby Box at the Richmond Fire Department on North Madison Avenue.

Officials say the ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. The new baby box is the 257th of its kind in the nation and the 130th in Kentucky. The Safe Haven Baby Box provides a secure and anonymous option for mothers in crisis to safely surrender their newborns. Once a baby is placed in the box, it alerts firefighters, who will then transport the baby to a hospital for medical evaluation before exploring options for adoption or foster care.
