New FCPS superintendent says his main goal is to continue in-person learning
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Monday is the first day on the job for Fayette County’s new superintendent, Dr. Demetrus Liggins. Speaking to reporters Monday, Liggins’ said his main goal right now is to continue in-person learning.
“I think our students suffered tremendously last year with their learning because of the at-home learning,” Liggins said.
He said he doesn’t have guidance yet on things like mask wearing or social distancing, but said parents can be sure it’s first on his to-do list. Liggins said he’s meeting with his ‘COVID Core Team’ and health officials Tuesday.
“We want to make sure that once we make a decision, we can stick to it,” Liggins said.
As for students wishing to stay home amidst surging COVID cases, or deciding not to get the vaccine, Liggins said the decision is personal.
“I don’t envy parent’s decision to have to make that. It’s been a long 17 months so far, and it continues to evolve,” Liggins said.
He also addressed Fayette County’s achievement gap for minority students.
“You have to acknowledge that it’s there and you have to really focus on making sure all students are getting the instructional practices and the instructional means that they need,” Liggins said.
He said that starts in the classroom, and he said he looks forward to meeting with teachers to make sure they have the tools they need.
COVID aside, Liggins said the biggest challenge he faces is ensuring a continued focus on mental health following the sudden death of former Superintendent Manny Caulk.
“I think it’s still a school district that needs time to mourn,” Liggins said. “Coming back together and having time to mourn makes a huge difference.”
Liggins said he hopes to continue Caulk’s legacy.
