New Fayette superintendent starts year with school bus ride

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Summer vacation ended today for many children in Kentucky. That includes Fayette County, where it was the first day of school for 40,000 students.

But it was also day one for the new superintendent. Manny Caulk didn’t drive his own car. Like thousands of students, he rode the school bus. Caulk hopped-on with more than 50 kids who were headed to Mary Todd Elementary in Lexington.

"A child’s first learning environment is the school bus, and so the school bus experience is so important. And what I want to do is be able to ride the bus and see it from a student’s perspective and interact with our elementary students. I also want to stop at middle school and high school as well," says Caulk.

When he isn’t riding the bus, Caulk drives a car with a front license plate that says ‘Superman.’ But he says it’s not what you think. He’s not claiming to be the modern-day Man of Steel. Caulk says it’s short for ‘Superintendent Manny.’
