New coronavirus numbers down in Fayette on Labor Day
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Fayette County’s coronavirus surge took a holiday Monday, registering just 49 new cases, according to the Lexington Fayette County Health Department’s morning update.
The 49 new cases pushed the county’s total to 6,499 on the six-month anniversary of the first case being diagnosed in the county.
University of Kentucky students continue to be a big part of the county’s increase. Of Monday’s 49 cases, 35 were UK students, bringing thenumber of Fayette County UK students to 1,121.
According to the morning report, 5,361 people have recovered, an increase of 82 from the prior report.
The county recorded no additional deaths, leaving the total at 61.
The first week of September saw 706 reported cases. Cases have grown steadily each month during the outbreak:

The health department’s numbers are for UK students who are Fayette County residents and is not a total of all cases at the university. A student who tests positive is considered a Fayette County resident if they live in Fayette County already or elect to stay in Lexington during their isolation.
If they commute to campus from another county or elect to return to their home town for isolation, they are not in the Fayette Health Department’s numbers.
