Neighbor Reacts to Officer-Involved Shooting
BEREA, Ky.-Many residents just trying to get home waiting along Log Cabin Road where told to stay put for several hours as authorities were investigating. They’ve since been allowed to return home. The shooting took place just up the hill on Arthur Jackson Road. Ryan Lewis who lives behind the shooter’s house says it doesn’t surprise him that something like this would happen in his neighborhood.
Lewis says, “There’s a lot thatgoes on. There’s a lot of drugs in stuff out in this area.”
Lewis says a lot of people in the area don’t know their neighbors.
He says, “A lot of people don’t. They stay clear of ’em, most of ’em do.”
But Lewis had met the shooter, 51 year old Daniel Pigg, before. He was a client at his auto repair shop.
State Police say Wednesday Pigg shot at Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Crutcher.
Crutcher was attempting to make a traffic stop when Pigg pulled into his own driveway and took off walking towards his front door.
After ignoring several verbal commands from the deputy Pigg pulled out a handgun and started shooting at him.
Kentucky State Police Trooper Josh Brashears says, “Deputy Crutcher was injured by one of the gunshots and returned gunfire, fatally striking Daniel Pigg.”
The Madison County Coroner pronounced Pigg dead at the scene.
Deputy Crutcher was hit in the abdomen, but has since been released from the hospital.
Trooper Brashears says, “We’re happy that he has non-life threatening injuries. It’s still very tough situation, just have his family in mind.”
Lewis says he’s glad Deputy Crutcher’s okay, but it’s a tough day.
“Ain’t nothing positive when someone gets killed.”
No word yet on exactly how many shots were fired or a motive as this investigation is still ongoing. Crutcher is a nine-year veteran of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.
