National Transportation Safety Board releases new information about Jessamine County fatal plane crash

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW via LEX NEWS) —

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released additional details to LEX News about a fatal plane crash that occurred in Jessamine County on Saturday.

As LEX News previously reported, the Blue Grass Airport began receiving distress calls around 8:46 a.m. regarding an aircraft that had lost its radar signal. According to the NTSB, the plane crashed around five minutes after the distress signals were sent out at 8:51 a.m. due to “unknown circumstances.”

NTSB investigators are currently searching for the following information: recordings of any air traffic control communications, radar data, weather reports, a 72-hour background check of the pilot, witness statements, electronic devices that may be relevant to the investigation, aircraft maintenance records, and the pilot’s license along with recent flight experience.

Individuals who witnessed the plane crash or who may own surveillance footage capturing the crash are asked to contact the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov.

The aircraft, identified as a CA6-WB, will be transported to a secure facility for further investigation.

The Jessamine County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that two people died as a result of a plane crash that occurred Saturday morning in Nicholasville in a farm off of Kentucky Route 169 between U.S. 27 and U.S. 68.

The sheriff’s office is working alongside the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the fatal plane crash.

“We were able to pinpoint the crash due to eyewitnesses,” Jessamine County Sheriff Kevin Grimes said.

The Jessamine County Sheriff’s Office and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating a reported plane crash in Nicholasville.

According to Jessamine County Sheriff Kevin Grimes, the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington noted a plane off radar sending distress signals around 8:46 Saturday morning. The small plane ended up crashing in a farm off of Kentucky Route 169 between U.S. 27 and U.S. 68. in Jessamine County.

“We started receiving multiple 911 calls of what appeared to be an airplane in distress. We also received a call from Blue Grass Airport that they were tracking an aircraft that had left the airport and that they lost sight of it on radar,” Jessamine County Sheriff Kevin Grimes said

At this time, the Jessamine County Sheriff’s Office cannot confirm if there are any injuries or fatalities as a result of the plane crash.

According to a social media post by the National Transportation Safety Board, the plane that crashed was a CA6-WB.

Online flight records reveal that the plane, registered as #N82BT, departed from the Blue Grass Airport at 8:40 a.m. and was last seen on radar at 8:46 a.m., with a total recorded flight duration of six minutes. The plane reached a recorded maximum altitude of 3,300 feet and a maximum speed of 189 miles-per-hour. The recorded flight distance was 10 miles.

“We feel for them, and we’re praying for them, and we hope that they found some solace that we’re doing the best we can to at least try to determine what happened with this crash,” Grimes said.
