Names of man killed, man trapped in Martin Co. coal mine rubble released
MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — The names of the man killed and the man still trapped in the Martin County coal mine rubble have been released.
Billy Daniels died when an 11-story coal processing facility collapsed on Tuesday and Alvin Nees is still trapped underneath, Martin County Judge-Executive Lon Lafferty told ABC affiliate WCHS.
Yesterday, emergency crews moved into a new phase of the search and rescue efforts — removing and searching piles of debris. Officials are also using cameras, listening devices and dogs to search for the Nees.
“We pick things off the pile, that is our primary search. We are going to put the debris in a pile and assign a search team to do a secondary search to make sure it doesn’t have any clues of the last known location of the victim we are looking for. It is a methodical process it is a slow process but is a process that has to take place to get into the building,” said scene operations chief Joody Meiman told WCHS.
At least seven state agencies are on the scene helping with the search, including the Lexington and Georgetown fire departments.
The coal processing facility collapsed as the two men were inside salvaging material; it hadn’t been used for years.
Gov. Andy Beshear issued an executive order so local officials could use state resources.
