Morehead Optimist Club recognized by state service awards
MOREHEAD, Ky. (WTVQ/Press Release) – The Kentucky Governor’s Service Awards has recognized the Morehead Optimist Club for its work with a variety of youth programs in Rowan County.
The Optimist Club received a Certificate of Recognition on behalf of Gov. Andy Beshear and Serve Kentucky, who has managed the awards program since 1995. It was nominated by Jason Slone, President and CEO of the Morehead-Rowan County Chamber of Commerce.
One of the club’s most well known projects was the Beds for Kids project done in collaboration with the Rowan County Detention Center, Rowan County Schools Youth Services and Big 4 Lumber in Morehead. The Optimist Club provided funding to purchase discounted materials from Big 4 that the detention center uses for inmates to construct twin size beds for needy families identified by the Rowan County Schools Youth Services.
Other programs and service projects that the Club is involved in include an oratorical contest, an essay contest, Tri-Star basketball skills, youth golf and sponsorship of numerous other youth activities through charitable bingo.
The awards program launched in 1975 and recognizes volunteer service across Kentucky, aiming to highlight the importance of volunteer and national service across the Commonwealth.
