Monument dedication honors historic Georgetown cemetery

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) A special dedication ceremony is being held Wednesday afternoon in Georgetown to honor the Old Georgetown Cemetery, recognized as the city’s first public cemetery.

The event, scheduled for 1 p.m. on North Hamilton Street, commemorates a site that serves as the final resting place for U.S. military veterans, United States Colored Troops, and Buffalo Soldiers.

The Kentucky Historical Society officially designated the cemetery as a Pioneer Cemetery in 2023. Officials say the earliest documented burial at the site dates back to the early 1800s.

The ceremony aims to honor the legacy of those buried there and acknowledge the cemetery’s historical importance to the Georgetown community.
