Monday Is An Important Health Insurance Deadline
One way the state hopes to improve Kentucky’s overall health is to increase the number of people with health insurance.
If you do not currently have health insurance, or you’re looking for a new plan, then Monday, December, 15th is an important deadline.
If you enroll in a plan through Kynect, the state’s health benefits exchange, by the end of the 15th, then your coverage starts January, 1st.
If you wait just one more day, on the 16th, then your coverage would not start until February, 1st.
The Executive Director of Kynect, Carrie Banahan, said health insurance increases people’s productivity. Banahan said with insurance people would miss less time at work, or school.
"Folks that now have health care coverage for the first time will have a better quality of life, and we will improve the overall health status of Kentuckians in years to come as a result," said Banahan.
Banahan reported more than 500,000 Kentuckians used Kynect in 2014 to buy health insurance. You can sign up on-line at http://www.kynect.ky.gov, on the phone at 1-855-4kynect (459-6328), and in person at the Kynect store in Fayette mall.
Individuals who make less than $46,000 a year will be eligible for a subsidy. For a family of four to be eligible for a subsidy, the net income must be under $95,000.
Banahan estimated there are about 300,000 in Kentucky without health insurance.
Under federal law, there is now a financial penalty if you don’t have health insurance.
