Mobile home fire displaces 6 near Georgetown; no injuries reported

Fire devastates mobile home; family escapes unscathed

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Today a fire destroyed a mobile home on Alamo Drive near Georgetown, displacing six residents. The Lexington Fire Department confirmed that there were no injuries, though the home sustained severe damage.

Family members of the victim were grateful everyone was safe.

“I am shaken, I am really shaken, because I’ve always been scared the trailer was going to catch on fire. Just have to worry about it with all the kids in there, but thank God they were ok, they were in school thank God,” said the grandmother of the victim.

The fire, which occurred off Georgetown Road in Lexington, left the mobile home charred and in ruins. Firefighters arrived at the scene a little after 9 a.m. to find the blaze originating in the middle of the trailer. At the time of the fire, two people were inside the home.

“One of the two people that were in the house at the time of the fire was awake, the other one was in bed. Luckily the one that was awake was able to wake up the one that was sleeping, otherwise, our guys coming in would’ve been really timely having to check those bedrooms,” said Lexington Fire Department Battalion Chief, Matt Galati.

According to a family member, the mobile home belonged to a mother and her five children. Most of the children were at school when the fire broke out, but one child was inside the home at the time.

“Kelly was in bed asleep the little girl didn’t have school today because Fayette County didn’t go to school. The little girl woke up and said ‘mama I smell smoke, it’s smoky in here,'” she said. “She opened the door and the flames were just everywhere, on the floor and everywhere. So she just grabbed her purse and the little girl and they went out, they went out the front door,” said the Grandmother of the victim.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. The family has stated that they are unsure of the origin of the blaze.
