Midway kicks off holiday weekend with “Sparks in the Park”

MIDWAY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Many people choose to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend with activities like cookouts and fireworks.

Midway, Ky. may be a small town but their Fourth of July celebration, “Sparks in the Park”, is an annual tradition that attracts community members from their own backyard as well as surrounding areas.

“Every year, the city likes to provide a meal and kind of a party for the community, and so we provide the barbecue, some live music,” says Stacy Thurman, a member of Midway City Council. “We call it Sparks in the Park because we don’t do fireworks, sometimes we have sparklers.”

Officials were forced to take a break last year due to the pandemic making this year’s return highly anticipated by many.

“I think that everybody is ready to get out and get together and be with their neighbors again and the weather’s perfect so I think we’ll have a really nice turnout tonight,” says Thurman.

Mayor Grayson Vandegrift started the event years ago and it has become a community favorite. Many families make it a part of their holiday traditions and some kids say they have been coming for as long as they can remember.

Sparks in the Park is a community tradition that the town looks forward to doing each year. To be a part of the celebration next year, the event is in the Walter Bradley Park and is free for anyone who wishes to come.
