Meet KY Derby 143 one-eyed contender Patch

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky Derby 143 is just a week and change away race fans.

Thursday, it was Todd Pletcher’s roster on display at Churchill Downs.  The handful galloping out a 1 3/8 mile.

Pletcher plans to work his Derby hopefuls again Friday with Saturday’s weather forecast.

The horse under Pletcher’s guidance everyone’s talking about?

Patch.

Missing his left eye, unknown why it developed swelling and inflammation in the globe due to an ulcer, the decision was eventually made to remove it after exhausting all options.

The miraculous part of the story?

Patch, with just three starts, including a place finish in the Louisiana Derby, is in the mix for roses.

Hear from Pletcher, and see Patch, in the video.
