Medal of Honor awarded posthumously to Kentucky WWII hero

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Trump honored a Kentucky soldier posthumously with the Medal of Honor on Tuesday for his actions in World War II.

First Lieutenant Garlin Conner is credited with fighting off hundreds of Nazi troops.

His widow, Pauline Conner, accepted the prestigious medal during a ceremony at the White House.

According to the Department of Defense, Conner fought on the front lines of ten military campaigns in World War two.

He was wounded seven times in nearly two and a half years of battle.

In one campaign, they say Conner took on the force of 600 German infantry troops, six tanks and tank destroyers from his position in a shallow ditch.

For three hours, he stayed in his position until he stopped the Germans advance.

Conner was honorably discharged from the army in 19-45.

He died in 1998 at the age of 79.
