McConnell seeks debate with McGrath

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Republican incumbent Mitch McConnell and Democratic challenger Amy McGrath could square off in a statewide televised debate this fall ahead of their highly publicized and expensive campaign for the Senate seat held for more tha three decades by McConnell.

Wednesday, McConnell sent a letter to McGrath challenging her to debate ahead of the November election. In the letter, McConnell stressed the importance of holding a debate with statewide reach between the two candidates and laid out a framework under which the debate can take place.

“I am challenging you to a socially distanced, Lincoln-Douglas style debate with a time-keeping moderator agreed upon by each of us,” wrote McConnell. “This would be a debate just between the two of us. No notes at the table, no props, and no audience. Kentuckians deserve clear answers from each of us on the issues that matter most, and this is the best format to deliver those answers. Team Mitch is eager to work with a Kentucky TV station with statewide reach to put together such a debate.”

McGrath has not yet responded.
