Mayor Linda Gorton to unveil new budget proposal

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – An economic discrepancy with the city’s revenue could be changed today.

Mayor Linda Gorton will present her new budget proposal for the 2020 fiscal year that would require some departments to cut spending up to 15 percent without employees being laid off.

In February, The Herald Leader reported that the Mayor’s proposal is expected to trim $ 2 million from the general fund budget which is $370 million.

According to city officials; that’s less than a one percent cut.

Officials also say that the city’s revenue dwindled a little more than $2.4 million dollars halfway through the fiscal year.

The city’s budget director says most of the cuts will come from maintenance, travel, and professional contracts all of which fall under discretionary spending; something the public most likely will not notice.

Mayor Gorton will present her proposal at 3 p.m. this afternoon in the Council Chamber of the Government Center.
