Mayor calls for the resignation of city council member
LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Tensions continue at London City Hall after Mayor Randall Weddle called for the resignation of a city council member during a meeting Monday evening that most of the council did not attend.
The meeting, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and streamed live on Facebook, saw only two council members present, while the others were absent. Mayor Weddle canceled the official session but still allowed community members to speak on various issues — including the 2024 police shooting of Douglas Harless and allegations of racism within city government.
Among those addressing the crowd were Lexington NAACP President Whit Whitaker and former state representative Charles Booker.
During the meeting, Weddle called for Councilmember Justin Young to resign following his recent arrest. Young is charged with domestic violence and accused of using a racial slur during an argument with his girlfriend.
“We stand with the community, we stand with everybody in this thing with Justin,” Weddle said during the meeting. “We will not tolerate racism in this community. We will not tolerate woman abusers here. Justin, from the mayor’s office — you need to resign.”
The meeting comes days after Weddle was reinstated as mayor following his impeachment and removal by the council in early September.
A link to the meeting remains available on the City of London’s official Facebook page. You can access it by clicking HERE.
According to court records, Justin Young is scheduled for a pretrial conference on October 14.
