Two FCPS schools named National Blue Ribbon Schools despite federal program ending

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Two Fayette County elementary schools have earned one of the nation’s top academic distinctions, even though the federal program that typically recognizes the honorees has abruptly ended.

Maxwell Elementary and Meadowthorpe Elementary were named 2025 National Blue Ribbon Schools, according to a release from Fayette County Public Schools. While the schools will not be honored in Washington, D.C., as is traditionally done, the Kentucky Department of Education plans to celebrate this year’s four qualifying schools during the state board of education meeting on Dec. 4 in Frankfort.

Maxwell Principal Matthew Spottswood said the recognition reflects years of dedication from the entire school community.

“We are beyond excited and humbled,” Spottswood said in the release. “This award is the culmination of an incredible journey — one rooted in love and the steadfast belief that remarkable achievements are possible when we collectively embrace the process.”

Spottswood added that the honor belongs to the entire Maxwell community.

Meadowthorpe Principal Stephanie Price shared similar praise for her school’s students, staff and families.

“It is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and collaborative spirit that defines our students, staff, and families,” Price said. “This is an honor we share, and one we will celebrate proudly.”

FCPS says honorees were selected based on overall student performance, subgroup performance and graduation rates. Maxwell, Meadowthorpe, Tamarack Elementary in Daviess County, and Graves County Central Elementary all qualified as Exemplary High-Performing Schools.

The announcement comes after the U.S. Department of Education ended the 43-year-old National Blue Ribbon Schools program earlier this year. State officials were notified in late August.
