Police arrest suspect after shooting at Richmond Apartments
RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ)- Richmond Police have arrested a suspect they say shot a man outside an apartment complex.
Officials say 38-year-old Kareen Jenkins shot a man in the stomach on Gibson Lane Monday morning.
The man was taken to UK hospital where police say he underwent emergency surgery and now remains in critical but stable condition.
While on scene, police evacuated part of the building after smelling gasoline.
A gas can was found in one of the rooms.
According to investigators, on Monday night Jenkins was seen operating a vehicle in the area of Lowes.
A Richmond officer attempted to stop Jenkins but he refused and led police on short pursuit before jumping out his vehicle and fleeing on foot, according to authorities.
Police say while he was fleeing, Jenkins unlawfully entered a local residence and told the occupants he was running from police.
Jenkins left the residence and was located hiding in a wooded area behind it, according to officials.
Police searched of the vehicle Jenkins was operating and they found a handgun, approximately 36.3 grams of methamphetamine, 8.6 grams of suspected heroin, and 8.3 grams of cocaine, according to Richmond Police.
Jenkins was charged with Assault 1st Degree, Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon, Fleeing or Evading Police 1st Degree and several other charges.
Jenkins is lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
