Man killed by deputy in Reno was Kentucky convict

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno police say the man a deputy shot and killed on the edge of the UNR campus was a Kentucky convict who served prison time for carrying a concealed weapon and was wanted on three active felony warrants.

Reno Police Lt. William Rulla identified the victim of Wednesday’s shooting as 33-year-old Robert William Hampton.

Rulla said Friday that Hampton has an extensive criminal history that also includes obstructing and resisting arrest.

He said a Washoe County deputy with a K9 and members of a federal fugitive task force attempted to arrest him during a traffic stop just north of downtown.

Rulla said Hampton became uncooperative, ignored commands and accelerated his car toward the deputy who fired his gun into the vehicle, striking and killing Hampton. The incident remains under investigation.
