Man Charged With Shooting Former Officer

A man has been arrested and charged in a shooting that killed a former police officer.

It happened around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday on Rush Lane in Monroe County.

When troopers arrived, they found Herbert Proffitt, 82, had been shot.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Proffitt served in law enforcement for more than 50 years in the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and as the former Tompkinsville Police chief.

Officials have now arrested Charles Hammer, 81, of Tompkinsville.

He is currently in the Monroe County Jail charged with murder.
