LPD: Teenager dies after being shot at apartment

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington police have responded to several shootings within the last few days.

Police say the number of shootings in Lexington is unusual for such a short amount of time. They say it isn’t one area being targeted but officers think a few of the shootings are related.

Police believe a small group of about five people are responsible. The department wouldn’t say this is gang related, but said some of the suspects are teenagers.

One of the shootings police are investigating happened about 11:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Nancy Hanks Road off of Red Mile Road.

Police say a teenager died after someone fired shots into an apartment late Monday night.

According to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, 15-year-old Antwan Roberts was taken to the University of Kentucky hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The Lexington Police Department believe Roberts was an innocent victim.

Police think a group of about five people involved in a number of shootings could be behind this one. Officers think they were looking for someone else who lives in the area and shot Roberts instead.

Logan Avritt knew Roberts through a violence prevention program he leads called ‘Motivated All Day Everyday’. He’s devastated Roberts died from something he was trying to stop.

“He was one of the guys I would’ve figured went off a done something very great in life,” said Logan Avritt.

Avritt says his program will continue to raise awareness, but first he wanted to show sympathy to the teen’s family.

He made a poster and had Robert’s friends sign it.

“Antwan was a great spirit,” said Avritt.

Fayette County Schools says Roberts was a sophomore at LaFayette High School. The school district says grief counselors will be available for students and staff in the wake of Robert’s death.

Police haven’t made any arrests in the case.
