UPDATE (2/10/21 12:15 P.M.) –

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Louisville Zoo is asking the public for help in naming a seal pup born on December 28, 2020.

According to zoo officials, there are three names up for a vote. Finsbay stands for the natural habitat for grey seals. Off the western coast of Scotland is a group of islands called the Outer Hebrides and Finsbay is a town in that group of islands. Finsbay is located south of the island of Rona, which is the origin of our seal Rona’s name.

NOAA, stands for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency that works to keep the public informed of the changing environment around them.

There’s also Oban which is a Scottish Sea Life Center in Oban, Scotland which became involved in seal conservation and rescue in 1980 when they took in a harbor seal pup that was abandoned by her mother.

Voting is underway HERE until Feb. 23 at 11:59 P.M. Votes cost a minimum of $1.00. All donations support the Zoo’s mission to “better the bond between people and our planet.”

At the end of the voting period, the name with the highest amount of donations will be the seal pup’s new name. The winning name will be announced Feb. 25 at 10 A.M. on the zoo’s Facebook page.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ/LOUISVILLE ZOO) – On Tuesday, the Louisville Zoo announced that a six-year-old gray seal, Rona, is expecting.

The father is a 16-year-old gray seal Boone, according to the Zoo.

They say this will be Rona’s first pup.

Gray seals are pregnant for about 11 months.

“Rona has more than doubled her weight in preparation for pupping and lactation”, says associate veterinarian Dr. Julie Ter Beest.  “We’re excited to see what kind of mom she will be.”

According to the Zoo, seal pups weigh approximately 30-35 lbs at birth and are born with a soft white hair coat called lanugo.
