Louisville firefighter injured while responding to fire

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Louisville firefighter has third degree burns to his left hand after battling a fire Wednesday night, according to the Louisville Division of Fire.

Officials say crews responded to a house fire with report of rescues in the 1600 of Thornberry Avenue near Churchill Downs just after 8 p.m.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy fire coming from the rear of a two-story, single family frame home, according to firefighters.

Investigators say firefighters made entry and no one was found inside.

Arson investigators are working to determine the cause.

Captain Salvador Melendez says the firefighter injured was 36-year-old Romaine R. Knight a 10 month veteran of the Division.

He is being treated at the University of Louisville Hospital’s Burn Unit, where he will remain for treatment for the next seven to ten days, according to officials.

He is in stable condition.
