London Mayor Randall Weddle warns of layoffs due to amended city budget
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – London Mayor Randall Weddle is warning of possible layoffs following the passage of an amended city budget, raising concerns about transparency and the city’s employee pay plan.
Weddle made the remarks during a specially called meeting held Tuesday, where council members considered the amended budget along with transparency and pay plan ordinances. The discussion quickly turned contentious as the mayor told council members the approved changes could lead to job cuts within the city.
The meeting featured heated exchanges between the mayor and several council members after Weddle outlined the potential impact of the budget amendments on city staffing. He said the changes could force the city to eliminate positions in order to remain financially stable.
According to Weddle, he emailed an alternative budget proposal to council members on Monday ahead of the meeting, offering a different approach that he said would avoid layoffs while still addressing financial concerns.
City leaders did not immediately indicate how many positions could be affected or when potential layoffs might occur.
