London Mayor Randall Weddle impeached after council hearing

LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – London Mayor Randall Weddle has been removed from office after the city council voted Friday to impeach him following hours of testimony, debate, and public scrutiny.

The impeachment vote came after council members considered 14 charges against Weddle, including allegations of misusing police resources, failing to properly fill housing authority appointments, signing a $5 million mortgage without council approval, and refusing to publish ordinances as required by law.

The case drew significant attention in recent weeks. Weddle’s attorney argued the proceedings were politically motivated and violated due process, pointing to shifting charges and procedural missteps. But council members said the mayor’s repeated actions amounted to misconduct and willful neglect of duty.

The impeachment vote followed the resignation of council member Stacy Benge, who had previously voted against bringing charges. Benge’s seat was filled earlier this week by Donna Gail Wilson-House, who cast her first major vote during the hearing.

Weddle had vowed to fight the charges and pledged to run for re-election in 2026 regardless of the outcome.

Following Weddle’s ouster, councilmembers voted for Tracie Handley as acting mayor.
