London City Council discusses possible litigation for Police Dept.
LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The London City Council convened multiple special meetings Monday night, just one month after a deadly police shooting that claimed the life of 63-year-old Doug Harless.
According to the London Police Department, the incident occurred on December 23 when officers were serving a search warrant on Vanzant Road. Dispatch audio indicated that police were at 489 Vanzant Road, where Harless allegedly pointed a gun at officers and was subsequently shot and killed.
However, a report from Kentucky State Police later revealed that the shooting took place at 511 Vanzant Road, not the address listed in the initial report.
During the special council meetings Monday, the city went into executive session to discuss possible litigation involving the London Police Department. While it is unclear whether the litigation is directly tied to last month’s shooting, frustration over the lack of transparency has grown, with many residents voicing concerns on the City of London’s Facebook page.
A candlelight vigil in honor of Harless is scheduled for Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. as the community continues to seek answers.
