Local Humane Society burglarized twice in one month

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)- People and animals are the victims after two burglaries in Frankfort.

Police are offering a $1000 reward after someone stole from a VFW chapter Wednesday.

Police say the thief smashed a glass door and stole several bottles of liquor.

The same day, police say someone broke into the Franklin County Humane Society.

They say a window was smashed and a small amount of cash stolen.

This is the second burglary this month at the humane society.

Staff at the humane society say while the amount of cash stolen during these two thefts may seem minimal to most, it’s had a huge impact on both the facility and employees.

“It makes you very sad and it’s put all the staff on edge as well,” said Kerry Lowary, manager of the Franklin County Humane Society.

Lowary says this months burglaries have really shaken not only the staff but the animals.

“They’re definitely affected by that because they’re here when someone they don’t know breaks into the building and actually the other day when staff arrived our shelter cat was outside because he got out through the broken window,” said Lowary.

Between the two burglaries. thieves stole more than $3,000.

“It is very disheartening because we feel like we provide a service to the community. We are helping homeless dogs and cats,” said Lowary.

In all, Lowary says these burglaries have cost the shelter much more in repairs and added security.

“We bought a security system that will be installed. We’re going to have to change all the locks and that sort of thing so yeah those are expenses that are not included in our regular operating expenses,” said Lowary.

But even in these hard times, Lowary says the shelter will remain a safe space for the county’s most vulnerable animals.

“We will continue to take care of our animals, as we have,” said Lowary.

The humane society will only be at their current location for a few more years.

A brand new shelter is currently in the works to be built near Capital View Park.
