Local churches participate in ‘Day of Prayer’ for Marshall Co. shooting victims

CYNTHIANA, Ky. (WTVQ) – Governor Matt Bevin declared Sunday a ‘Day of Prayer,’ in the state of Kentucky. That’s in honor of the Marshall County tragedy, as two victims were laid to rest Sunday afternoon.

With music and a message, it seemed just like a regular service at Cynthiana First Church of God. Then, they lit candles, dimmed the lights and prayed, as part of a special service in honor of the shooting victims.

Two candles that sit at the front of church every Sunday, had a new meaning. For Sunday, they represented the two 15-year-olds whose lives were taken all too soon at Marshall County High School.

The flame from those two candles was passed around the sanctuary, lighting others in solidarity with people in need of a little extra support.

“I’m just so glad that we were able to come together as a church and pray for those folks, and I hope that right at that moment those families that are hurting down there in Marshall County felt that,” said Kathy Livingood, a member at the church.

Pastor Earl Litman says he believes what Governor Bevin did in declaring a ‘Day of Prayer’ was something the state needs.

“I believe the country was founded on prayer, and as a minister, that’s what we do,” said Pastor Litman. “We do a lot of praying, but I also believe we need to come together. Christians and non-Christians a like, we need to come together.”

He hopes people realize prayer doesn’t have to stop when you walk out the church doors.

“They can do it at home,” said Litman. “I pray every time I go in the supermarket because I don’t know what I’m buying. But, we need to pray. We need to pray. Pray while you’re driving, pray all the time.”
