Local candy shop braces for last minute holiday shoppers
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — We’re sure you’ve noticed the last minute holiday shoppers congesting Lexington’s streets, causing insane lines at stores.
But one local family-owned candy shop says bring it on.
Sharp’s Candies, located off Regency Road, says this is its biggest weekend of the year.
“Everything made here is from scratch,” says candy shop owner, Rob Sharp.
He’s a third generation candy maker. Sharp’s Candies started in 1973. It’s Lexington’s oldest candy shop.
So how does the oldest candy shop in town prepare for its busiest time of year?
“We have all of our orders in and have been in for months. We stage it so everything comes in then we get everything ready and then from there it’s just lots and lots of hours,” says Sharp.
He expects to see thousands of shoppers this weekend.
“It is truly amazing that one little shop can move so many people in and out,” says Sharp.
They’re ready, though.
“We know it’s crunch time. You have to set aside your personal life and strictly focus on your business this time of year,” says Sharp. He understands the sacrifice.
But Christmas time is what keeps this family-owned business going.
“If something happened, a bad weather storm, and we weren’t able to put out as much product as we do at Christmas time it would be very hard for this business to survive,” admits Sharp.
But it’s been a huge success. The business broke a record Monday by selling 1,000 packages in just one day.
“We are shipping out so much candy nationwide. It really amazes me how many boxes of candy,” says Sharp.
So many hours put in and so much stirring.
“I’ve been doing it long enough I think I have all the necessary muscle groups intact,” jokes Sharp.
He says it’s all worth it.
Sharp’s is open all weekend, even on Christmas Eve, so go get your last minute treats. It’s located at 2021 Regency Road in Lexington.
