Lincoln Co. couple who lost everything in pipeline explosion speak out
LINCOLN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — It’s been almost a week since the pipeline explosion in Lincoln County that killed a woman and hurt several others.
Then, we spoke to a couple who lost everything. We checked in on them again Tuesday.
“Still just trying to figure out what to do it’s kind of been like a whirlwind,” says Denver Coulter.
A whirlwind caused by the pipeline exploding. It destroyed Denver and Jodie Coulter’s home, everything in it and melted their cars.
“You have your moments when you think about what you’ve lost but we’re really thankful to be alive,” says Denver.
Being alive is something the Coulters didn’t believe was possible that night they describe as hell on earth.
“I looked and I just couldn’t believe we were still alive, running from it. Kind of looked like a big monster just ready to swallow us up,” says Denver. “I thought it was over. I didn’t think we were gonna make it. I thought it was our last night on earth.”
They say the coroner doesn’t understand how they made it, either.
“He said in the brown area there was no oxygen to breathe so logically it’s impossible you’re alive. So I can’t explain it other than the hand of God led us out and then he just kept pushing us,” explains Jodie.
They say before running with their dog, Jordan, they thought they were trapped so they were thinking about how to end their lives quicker.
“Denver didn’t wanna watch me burn, Jordan burn or himself burn so he was gonna shoot us. He was gonna shoot me and Jordan and then himself,” says Jodie.
“Ya know when you’re in a situation like that crazy things run through your head and like she said, you don’t want to burn to death,” says Denver.
Jodie says a month before the explosion she suspected something would happen because she’d felt the ground shake a couple times.
“I don’t feel safe. Something’s gonna happen. I said we’ll find something else, I want to leave here and we were going to but we ran out of time,” says Jodie.
They say the help they’re receiving now from family and the community keeps them going.
“It’s amazing the love that we felt. It’s like we’ve lost everything but we’ve gained everything,” they both say.
They couldn’t stop saying how thankful they were to be alive.
“I feel like we shouldn’t be here,” says Denver. “But we’re here.”
