LIHEAP Crisis Assistance Opens January 6 Across Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Kentuckians facing heating emergencies will be able to apply for help beginning Tuesday, January 6, through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, Crisis component.

The program will run statewide in all 120 counties through March 27, 2026, or until funding is exhausted. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through local Community Action Agency offices.

LIHEAP Crisis assistance is available to eligible households dealing with an imminent loss of heat, low fuel supply, or eviction due to unpaid utility bills. Households must meet income guidelines of up to 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Officials say receiving LIHEAP assistance earlier in the season does not disqualify applicants from the Crisis program.

Benefits are paid directly to energy or fuel providers and cover the minimum amount needed to resolve the emergency. Assistance is capped at the local cost of a deliverable supply of heating fuel or up to $400 for gas or electric service. Households may reapply if they experience additional qualifying emergencies.

Residents can contact their local Community Action Agency, call 800-456-3452, or visit capky.org to find an office and learn more about required documentation.

LIHEAP is administered by Community Action Kentucky in partnership with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, using federal funds provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
