Light the Night Walk Saturday
Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ)–On Saturday, Whitaker Bank Ballpark will be lined with lanterns for the Light the Night Walk to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. People will also be holding three different colors of lanterns: red for supporters, white for survivors and gold to remember the lives lost to blood cancers.
The Amyx team has been doing the walk in Lexington since 2009. Saturday, most team members will be holding gold lanterns in memory of Dr. John Amyx.
“John was a really great person. He was a hard worker. A committed husband, father,” says Barbara Hatton, LLS committee member and sister to Amyx. “Some people have described him as the finest person they’ve ever met.”
Hatton explained that Amyx was a veterinarian and drove all over the state to care for animals. She said she worried about her brother getting hurt by a horse or injured in a car accident. She never thought her brother would be diagnosed with lymphoma. “Cancer was not on our radar. Lymphoma was not on our radar. We have no family history. There was no reason,” explained Hatton.
She says after her brother died in 2012, she did not know if she would continue to participate in the walk or LLS organization. To date, the Amyx team has raised around $50,000 for what she calls cutting-edge research to find treatments and one day, a cure for blood cancers. “We want to do this in his memory and honor… To continue on a mission that he would want us to continue on,” says Hatton.
The walk is scheduled for rain or shine for 7:15 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, 207 Legends Lane. Organizers say if you care to contribute to LLS research, you can stop by and make a donation.
