Kentucky mother remembers her son after organ donation

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – More than thirteen thousand Americans are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

According to UK Healthcare, just over a thousand of them are in Kentucky.

Liz Shemwell lost her son after a car accident when he was four years old outside of Kroger Field last year. Marco Shemwell was wait to cross Cooper Drive with his dad when a freshman accused of driving drunk reportedly hit him on game day.

When it was clear her son, Marco, wouldn’t make it the family made the decision to donate his organs. She remembers her son and his love of action figures, “Marco’s favorite super hero was Batman because he helps people, and we knew if he was here to tell us what he wanted us to do, he would want to make the decision to donate his organs.”
