LGBTQ historical markers revealed

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The first historical markers to recognize Kentucky’s LGBTQ history were revealed Sunday.

One of the markers, outside the bar complex on Main Street, recognizes the site as the oldest continuous LGBTQ gathering place in Kentucky, going back as far as 1939.

It’s where the first lesbian couple in the US, who sued for a marriage license, got married in 1970.

The other marker on Water and Quality Streets commemorates the location where Jefferey Wasson was charged with sodomy in 1985. That case overturned the state’s sodomy law.
