LFD: Home Fires Peak During Thanksgiving Holiday
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Fire Department says home fires tend to peak during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Firefighter Jessica Bowman says the reason for a lot of those fires is unattended cooking.
The fire department talked with ABC 36’s Fadia Patterson about cooking safety tips to keep a fire from ruining the holiday:
- Keep a close eye on what you are cooking/ never leave the home.
- Turn pots and pans inward, to avoid them from being knocked off the stove.
- Keep a lid nearby in case of a fire.
- Keep a kid-free and pet-free zone
If you plan on using a turkey frier — the Lexington Fire Department makes the following recommendatios
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby
- Keep the turkey frier at least 10 feet away from the home
- Use peanut oil
- make sure level of oil in pot is not too high
- keep a thermomete
