LFD: Home Fires Peak During Thanksgiving Holiday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Fire Department says home fires tend to peak during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Firefighter Jessica Bowman says the reason for a lot of those fires is unattended cooking.

The fire department talked with ABC 36’s Fadia Patterson about cooking safety tips to keep a fire from ruining the holiday:

  • Keep  a close eye on what you are cooking/ never leave the home.
  • Turn pots and pans inward, to avoid them from being knocked off the stove.
  • Keep a lid nearby in case of a fire.
  • Keep a kid-free and pet-free zone

If you plan on using a turkey frier — the Lexington Fire Department makes the following recommendatios

  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby
  • Keep the turkey frier at least 10 feet away from the home
  • Use peanut oil
  • make sure level of oil in pot is not too high
  • keep a thermomete
