Lexington woman works toward peace after recent violence

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- One ordinary citizen is hoping to make a difference and bring the community together by trying to plan a peaceful march through the city.

Ida Warford is tired of hearing about violence in Lexington.

From Sunday through Tuesday, nine people ended up shot in five different incidents. Three of those nine victims died and there have been no arrests yet in any of the shootings and no indication yet if they were connected in any way.

"I was laying in my bed, I was going through my news feed, my Facebook news feed and I was seeing people were saying, ‘stop the violence’ and that’s what made me want to do something about it," says Warford.

Her Facebook page, "Stop the Violence Lex" is growing rapidly, gaining hundreds of "likes" from people like herself, ready to continue movements for peace. Her march, which is yet to be dated, isn’t unlike many the city has seen. Warford hopes to lead the group of marchers to downtown Lexington. She’s teaming up with another initiative here in Lexington and it’s one that she hopes helps spread what she’s trying to do.

"I want people to have a different mindset so it won’t always have to be about violence and everything else. They can take a different approach," says Warford.

Sarah Williams, from the Kentucky Justice Coalition says that different approach is a conversation.

"Addressing the issue of how do we rebuild community will automatically have an effect on how to we stop the violence."
