Lexington VA holds virtual hiring fair for disabled veterans

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington VA Health Care System is hosting a virtual job fair for veterans who have a VA rating of at least 30 percent service-connected disabled and are interested in housekeeping positions.

“Our housekeeping aid positions are reserved for disable veterans,” said Bernardino Guerrero, chief of environmental management service at the Lexington VA Health Care System. “It’s a great way for veterans to get their foot in the door and work their way up. Who better to take care of veterans, than veterans?”

Veterans who are considered at least 30 percent disabled by the Departments of Defense or Veterans Affairs are encouraged to apply for a direct appointment to one of these positions by emailing a copy of their resume to HousekeepingAidHiringBlitz@va.gov by February 28.

Qualified candidates will be invited to interview, and VA will conduct finger printing and background verification. VA will keep the information on file of candidates not selected for immediate placement when another vacancy occurs.

Housekeeping Aids normally work at one of the locations for the health care system (Bowling Campus or Sousley Campus), but are required to work at either location as necessary. Aides may work any assigned tour of duty in support of 24-hour service with an hourly wage of $13.30.

Some major duties performed: picks up and removes regulated medical waste from patient care areas and all other areas within the facility. S/he assures that all waste materials are properly double-bagged and transports them to the regulated medical waste holding area for future disposal. S/he stays abreast of the accumulation of regulated medical waste. The types of wastes handled include, but are not limited to, infectious waste from isolation rooms, clinics, and the operating room; antineoplastic (chemotherapy drug) waste (trace and bulk).

The Lexington VA Health Care System hopes to hold virtual hiring fairs throughout the year to fill positions with qualified Veterans.
