Lexington Urban Council to consider proposed pet store ordinance

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The full Urban County Council in Lexington will convene Thursday to discuss a significant proposal: the implementation of a pet store ordinance aimed at curbing the sale of animals from puppy mills. If passed, this ordinance would prohibit the sale of dogs and cats sourced from such establishments in local pet stores.

Currently, three cities across the state – Louisville, Elizabethtown, and Radcliff – have similar bans in place. The proposed ordinance seeks to align Lexington with these municipalities in prioritizing the welfare of animals and addressing concerns related to puppy mills.

Following Thursday night’s reading, the ordinance will undergo further review, with a second reading and final vote scheduled for June 13th.

We will update this developing story as the council deliberates on this important issue.
