Lexington storm causes road closures, power outages
UPDATE: 11:07 a.m. – Newtown Pike is now open in both directions, after being closed for hours due to Thursday’s storm damage.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Drivers in north Lexington are being warned of significant road closures following Thursday’s storm, which brought down power lines and poles in several areas.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Newtown Pike is closed in both directions between Nandino and Aristides Boulevards. Additionally, all lanes of Citation Boulevard are closed at Georgetown Road, between Bull Lea Road and Newtown Pike. City officials say Newtown Pike is also closed at the I-75 interchange.
Crews have been working around the clock to restore power to the area. At one point, thousands were without electricity, and as of early Friday morning, about 1,000 homes and businesses were still affected.
Transportation officials say all lanes are expected to reopen by 10 a.m., but drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until then.
