Lexington soccer fans celebrate another World Cup win
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The United States Women’s National Team beat England in the semi-finals Tuesday afternoon and fans in Lexington showed their support.
West 6th Brewery hosted a watch party for the game. Dejohn and her two friends Kayla Steber and Shannon Kelley showed up in their red, white and blue.
“We’re just so proud and we love our team,” Jodi Dejohn said.
The three friends grew up playing soccer and also play in a women’s soccer league in Lexington.
Dejohn said the national team can be an inspiration to women everywhere, no matter their age.
“The national team has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams in soccer and outside of soccer and this encouraged me to push past my limits that I think I might have,” she said. “I think it’s pretty cool to have an inspiration like that.”
The women’s national team might not get as much attention year round as they do when in the World Cup, but Kelley said any time in the spotlight can only do well by women in soccer.
“I think it really promotes the sport in general and getting people excited about playing soccer, getting girls into the sport,” Kelley said.
The U.S. Women’s National Team plays for the championship on Sunday.
