Lexington SC excited to start regular season as they enter year two
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Lexington Sporting Club is just weeks away from their season opener against the Northern Colorado Hailstorm, and the excitement for the second year continues to build.
“The most pleasing thing to see is the players attitude and commitment every day has been really first class, so all the players want to take on new ideas and learn to get better,” says new head coach, Darren Powell, who is thrilled to show others the caliber talent of the team.
In its second season, the team is adding several players, while also keeping some of key contributors from its inaugural season.
“We’ve been working on a lot of defensive shape, shooting organization, a lot of stuff. So I’m really happy with how the preseason is going. So far, we’ve played two games so far. And we’ve seen a lot of stuff that we’ve worked on in the in the training so far,” adds returning goalkeeper, Amal Knight.
Powell also adding, “the attitude, the effort, the desire to represent this team and represent this club and represent, you know, everybody from the owners to the youth club, and I think is something that all these players embrace. And they’re really looking forward to getting started.
Cameron Lancaster is one of the newest additions to the team.
Lancaster comes from Louisville City FC, where he accumulated quite the accolades.
He says he is ready for the next chapter in the horse capital of the world.
“I’m looking forward to showing off what we’re building, what we’re building with not just the infrastructure, not just the facilities, the stadium, but we’re building as a team as like a group as a culture. I’m looking for the future, and I want to break records here,” he says.
Meantime newly named CEO Kim Shelton is also excited about being a part of the USL Super League.
“To be a former female athlete, former women’s soccer player and to be here in this place, you know, working for the Women’s World Cup and being around the Women’s World Cup and watching it continue to grow. It’s a really exciting time for the for the game,” said Shelton.
LSC is also looking forward to having their own stadium in Lexington.
Shelton says it should be done by late summer.
“Brace yourself! Here we come. Because, we know we’ve been in Georgetown and we’re so grateful for the Georgetown community for embracing us. But we’re coming to Lexington here, coming in August,” said Shelton.
LSC will open regular season play on March 9th.
