Lexington to salute late soldier Nathan Caulder

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The American Legion Post #132 hopes the community will remember a late soldier this weekend. Nathan Caulder died June 1, 1919 and is buried in the African Cemetery No. 2 in Lexington.

“African Cemetery No. 2 was organized in 1869, charged by the state 1870,” said Yvonne Giles, a board member with the cemetery.

Giles says the cemetery will celebrate 150 years in 2020. And over the past century, they’ve learned a lot about African Americans in Kentucky like Caulder.

Giles says his headstone reads, “Nathan Caulder, sergeant, 351st machine gun battalion 92nd division.”

This year marks 100 years since Caulder’s death. It’s why Giles says they decided to hold an event this weekend in his honor.

“We approached the American Legion post, Mr. Richards, and asked would you please participate with us in honor of him,” said Giles, who explained that’s when they learned about Caulder’s history.

A ceremony will take place in Caulder’s honor Saturday, June 1st at 11 a.m. until noon at African Cemetery No. 2 on East Seventh Street in Lexington. A reception will follow at the American Legion Post #132 on North Limestone.
