Lexington, Ky (WTVQ): February 13th marks 20 years since Lexington’s first black female firefighter, Lieutenant Brenda Cowan was killed in the line of duty while out on an ems call.
The city and the school named after her, continues to remember her legacy. In downtown Lexington, at Phoenix Park more than 100 law enforcement officers gathered to remember Cowan’s life. Fire Chief Jason Wells says, “I don’t know that I’veever met someone who was as internally optimistic and just as genuine as Brenda was. There was always a smile,” Wells said.
Officers who worked closely with her remember her for her positive energy. Brian Dawson worked closely with Cowan, “Every time I think of her, I smile, but she will always be remembered as a joy to be around and a light in a time of darkness,” Cowan said.
Fire Chief Jason Wells says Cowan helped to promote change before she died in the line of duty. He says prior to Cowan’s death, it was unusual for EMS to wait for the police Now, “in situations where we believe violence is likely to occur we will wait for law enforcement to come in and secure a scene,” said Wells.
Meanwhile at the Brenda Cowan Elementary School, a ceremony was held where nearly 20 firefighters went to classrooms to read to children. Principal Josh Williams say the school created a week of service in Cowan’s honor.
“When people walk through this building, I think you can feel the love of Brenda Cowan, and what it means to serve others and be engaging and welcoming,” said Williams.
Williams says this day, and week highlights all of the work she did to make this community a better place.
“She was very active from my understanding in volunteering to support various projects throughout the district, and really just supporting kids through their learning and just having a presence,” Williams said.
Williams says this entire month the school is doing a food drive all donations will be donated to community food banks.
