Lexington prepares for significant winter storm as snow, ice expected this weekend

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — City leaders in Lexington are urging residents to prepare now as a significant winter storm is expected to move into the area late Friday and continue through the weekend.

Mayor Linda Gorton outlined the city’s preparations Thursday afternoon, saying forecasts point to a potentially disruptive winter weather event that could impact travel, services and daily routines across Fayette County.

“If the forecast is accurate, this is a significant weather event,” Gorton said, encouraging residents to plan ahead before conditions worsen. She urged people to stock up on groceries and medications, fuel up vehicles, charge devices and check on neighbors — especially older adults and those who may need extra help.

City emergency management officials recommend households be ready to be self-sufficient for at least 96 hours in case of power outages or hazardous travel conditions. Residents are encouraged to review emergency kits and make sure they include non-perishable food, water, flashlights, extra blankets, warm clothing and supplies for pets.

Rob Larkin, Lexington’s director of emergency management, said the goal is preparation, not panic.

“This storm will likely disrupt normal activities, including municipal services, education, transportation, business and commerce,” Larkin said. “Now is the time to prepare.”

Roads, parking and city services

The city’s Division of Streets and Roads has already begun pre-treating shaded areas, hills and major intersections. Crews will continue treatment through Friday, and all Streets and Roads employees involved in snow response have been placed on call.

To help crews clear roads efficiently, city officials are asking residents not to park along major streets and snow routes.

LexPark will also open several downtown parking garages for free to help keep vehicles off the streets during snow removal operations. The following garages will be open at no charge:

  • Transit Center Garage, 150 E. Vine Street — open 8 a.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Tuesday

  • Helix Garage, 156 W. Main Street — open 8 a.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Tuesday

  • Courthouse Garage, 150 Barr Street — open 8 a.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Tuesday

  • Victorian Square Garage, 350 W. Short Street — open 6 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Tuesday

Sidewalk crews are also preparing to clear downtown sidewalks ahead of Saturday’s University of Kentucky men’s basketball game at Rupp Arena.

Residents are also reminded to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and to plan ahead for safe heating options in case of power loss.

City officials say they will continue to monitor forecasts closely and share updates as conditions develop.
