Lexington Police recruiting for next class in 2025
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — If you’ve ever considered a job in law enforcement, look no further, the Lexington Police Department is currently recruiting for its next academy class.
“Being part of the police department for over 30 years, it’s, it’s a unique experience,” says Chief Lawrence Weathers, of the department, reflecting on his career.
“We’re looking for someone that wants to represent their city, someone that maybe might be in the commercial service industry, and they’ve been serving their community for the past couple years. Maybe they were born and raised here, or maybe they just work as a bartender,” said SGT. Guy Miller, who says being born and raised in Lexington and becoming part of LPD provides a great sense of pride.
“When we all come together in that tight knit community, especially like, if you’re a new recruit, in the recruit Academy, and you have a variety of different cultures in that class, you become a tight knit community, and you get to see the ins and outs of certain cultures,” added Miller.
Adding that, during the classes, you become united, “it’s something you don’t expect, but when you’re going through that recruit class, you form bonds that you’ll never form anywhere else,” also said Miller.
For Chief Lawrence Weathers, “we’re ahead of the curve on community policing, we started that back in the 90s, and we’re doing things that other people don’t do, getting to know people on a first name basis in the beef that you work and seeing them out on the street and saying hi to them and starting up a conversation with them that has absolutely nothing to do with law enforcement.”
Adding that, the department is making it a priority to be approachable and transparent in the community.
“You don’t sit back and wait and see what other people are doing. That means you see something, and you do something about it, and you go out and you make things happen,” said Chief Weathers.
Miller adds that if you are debating being a part of the force, you may consider doing a ride along.
“We also have prep courses, there’s one on August 1 at 6pm at our training academy, register sign up, just see what it’s like. It’s free, the recruiter, some people, the training staff, will be there that just educate you about police, there’s also the citizen’s police academy, if you’re thinking about it, go through the citizen police academy,” said Miller.
Starting salary for officers is almost $62,000.
There is also an extensive benefits package.
