Lexington Police back out searching for Melanie Flynn

MERCER COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — Investigators were back out in Mercer County Tuesday hoping to find answers in a decades-old missing persons case.

Melanie Flynn went missing in 1977.

42-years later, Lexington and State Police are searching Murphy’s Landing, located along the Kentucky River.

Police say they are following up on a tip that could potentially lead to her remains.

Last week, police received a tip that Flynn could be buried at an old campground in Mercer County.

Police say they have been actively working this investigation for the past few weeks when the first tip came in.

Kentucky State Police have brought K9’s to the scene.

Crews used ground scanning equipment and made a grid of the area.

On Tuesday, they started digging.

It’s believed Flynn’s disappearance had something to do with the Blue Grass Conspiracy, a multi-million-dollar drug ring that was said to include Lexington police officers and well connected community members.

Lexington Police say they just want to bring closure to the family.

“Even though it’s an old case, every tip we get we want to make sure we use all the technology we can to be able to solve this incident,” says Sergeant Donnell Gordon, PIO with the Lexington Police Department.

He says anyone with any information that could help end this cold case is asked to contact them or KSP.

We reached out to Flynn’s family for comment but there’s been no response at this time.
